Gothtronic review of Aeon Xpand

May 1, 2008

Empty is the Australian duo Aaron Potter and Daniel Brunet and in 2005 they started with their electro/industrial act with the release of their debut album Open Aeon in 2006. While we're waiting for the new full length, we get a remix EP entitled Aeon Xpand to listen to. The bands that have remixed the original tracks of the debut are Disharmony, Zintek, Pask, and Searad among others.
I haven't heard the originals, but what I get to listen to on this remix EP is pretty standard dancefloor oriented electronice/industrial in my opinion. The thumping tracks 'Castrated (Original Remix)', 'Scarred (JVL 7'' Construction Remix)', and 'Castrated (Zintek Remix)' are varied with somewhat calmer tracks like 'Alone (Disharmony Remix)', 'Torn (Process Void Ripped Remix)', and 'Torn (searad Remix)'.

For me, the two highlights on this EP are 'Torn (Pask Remix)' with a nice raw and industrial beat and a nice and danceable IDM feel to it and the In-Tranzit remix of 'Castrated' which closes the album and which is a nicely hypnotizing trance-like track.

Nothing new can be discovered with Empty; but as long as they deliver such kind of nice remix EP's, lack of challenge isn't a problem in this genre.

Empty - Surfacing

A breath of badly needed fresh air.

- Rick Gallo (Arable Farmland - Chicago, USA)

Complex and melodic, with an underlying current of desperation.
